A New Form of University Life
This semester, I try something different- I found a part-time job in a cram school.
At first, I was looking forward to find a job that I can teach students English and help them with their English homework, as I am an English major university student.
However, I realized that my job is to take responsibility for checking the fifth and sixth grade elementary school students’ homework on the first day I worked there.
I was a little bit disappointed then because I thought it was boring sitting there and checking their homework with the answer sheets which another teacher gave me.
What’s more, elementary school students usually don’t have any English homework to do, so I don’t even have the opportunity to help them with their English questions.
But I was wrong and underrated this job on the second day I worked there. This is how thing works, the students give me all of their homework altogether whenever they finish it, and then I have to check their answers and circle the wrong ones for them to make a correction, and they will bring back the advised ones for me to check once again.
Furthermore, they cannot go home until their homework are finished checking and revising. And it was why everything become a mess on the second day: I was unable to check their homework rapidly if there are more than two students gave me all of their homework at the same time.
Moreover, there might be other students finish doing their homework or revising their mistakes and hand in to me when I was checking other’s halfway.
Besides, some of the students might fooling around the classroom while waiting for me to check their homework, and I will feel stressful and even couldn’t find the right answer sheet to the homework.
Fortunately, after working there for a few times, I am accustomed to the job pretty well now. Although I don’t really “teach” the students anything, I enjoy interacting with them.
Besides, they started to ask me some homework questions after we become familiar to each other, which is worth celebrated!
Since I found a part-time job, I finally understand the meaning of “you can’t have everything you want”. On the other words, you have to sacrifice something in order to get another.
Now I am only free on Wednesday night during week days, which means I can only have dinner with my friends on Wednesday. Furthermore, I am unable to attend the basketball training of my department basketball team on Thursday night anymore.
Both eating dinner with my friends and practicing basketball are the things I really enjoyed in my freshman year, so it was pitiful that I can’t continue doing these things in my sophomore year.
Anyways, I believe that I can still live another form of university life happily and with satisfaction!
