Harry Potter-
Major Differences Between Novels and Movies

I remember when I first read the novel of Harry Potter, I was obsessed with the magical world with all the amazing scenes and fantastic beasts created by the author, J.K Rowling.

Harry Potter is a sequence of seven fancy novels concerning the life of a youthful wizard, Harry, and his best friends Ron and Hermione in the wizarding world. As an orphan living with his aunt, uncle and cousin miserably, Harry was told that he is a wizard, and it is time for him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He brought the readers through many adventures. Most

importantly, it is his fate to defeat the most powerful

and dangerous dark wizard, Lord Voldemort.

The attractive plots of Harry Potter made it the best-selling book series in

record. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I have watched both its novels and movies so many times. Although the plots and scenes were presented both in the novels and movies

amazingly, there are some discrepancies.

Firstly, some fascinating characters and events in the books are partially or even completely removed in the movies.

In the novels, Peeves, the most notorious and troublesome poltergeist in Hogwarts, is a troublemaker in the school hall who always teases the students and creates chaos in different occasions. Also, the Quidditch Cup is the most famous and favorable sport in the magic world which is played on the flying broomsticks, and is presented frequently in the novels.

Unfortunately, peeves never appear, and the Quidditch Cup scene barely shows up in the movies.

Secondly, some characters described in the novels are different from the movies, including their personalities and appearances.

In the novels, Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts is regarded as the greatest wizard of all time. He is always characterized as a wise, kind, calm and mysterious old man. Plus, the color of Harry’s eyeballs is often mentioned in the novel as they resemble his mother’s.

However, in the movies due to the interpretation of the actors, Dumbledore’s characteristics are poorly executed, which shows a completely different personality in some scenes, as well as the color of both Harry’s and his mother’s eyeballs are not even the same.

At last, the romance between Harry and Ron’s sister, Ginny, makes more sense in the books than in the movies.

In the novels, the dynamic and chemistry between them develop gradually. And the reason why Harry falls in love with her is reasonable since Ginny is an attractive girl with a brave and smart personality.

Nevertheless, in the movie, Ginny has far less screen-time, and Harry’s infatuation toward Ginny is seldom mentioned, which occurs suddenly in the late stage of the plot.

To sum up, there are three major discrepancies in the book series and the movie series, including the removal of characters and events, different appearances and personalities of the characters, and the romance between Harry and Ginny.

However, in spite of the differences, people of different ages are still fascinated by the amazing series.

Take myself as an example, as a huge fan of Harry Potter, I not only enjoy reading the novels since they offer more detailed plots and descriptions, and by reading the content, I am capable of taking advantage of my imagination to interpret the scenes appears in the novels freely, but I also enjoy watching the movies for the reason that all the amazing scenes was shown on the screen lively.

Thus, the discrepancies do not make them be excluded them from becoming the most popular fantasy novels among people of all ages. The fantastic Harry Potter series will never go out of fashion.
